Wireless Internet is an interesting and revolutionary invention.  It allows people to access various information from all over the world without being plugged into a system.

In order to receive a connection wirelessly, you need to first have a wireless router.  The farther you move away from this router, the worse your connection will get.

The most common solutions to this problem used to be either only access the Internet in a close proximity to the router or to install a hard Internet line and connect another router in another place in the home or office.  Wireless repeaters, however, offer an alternative fix.

Wireless repeaters are devices that help repeat the network signal that is transmitted from the wireless router.  This allows the signal to reach places farther away from the router than normal.

Placement of the wireless repeater is critical though.  For example, if you are having trouble receiving Internet connection on one side of your home or office because the wireless router is on the other side of the building, the repeater should be placed at an in between or intermediary location.  This will allow the device to work as effectively as possible.

wireless repeatersSometimes referred to as a wireless expander or range extender, the wireless repeater does not even need to be physically connected to your router.  It simply picks up on the radio signals that are transmitted from router and retransmits them.  This allows the source of the Internet connection to be moved closer to where you want to access it and usually increases the speed/quality of the connection.

It is typically most effective to purchase a wireless router and wireless repeater that are manufactured by the same company.  This decreases the risk of the repeater retransmitting the incorrect radio signals.  This often happens when one repeater has trouble interpreting and repeating the radio signals from the wireless router.

Therefore, it is recommended to purchase a router and repeater from the same company, but it is not required. However, these misinterpreting radio signals may cause your system to actually slow down. Popular and reputable brand names include Linksys, Belking, Hawking, Cisco, and Netgear, to name just a few.

Wireless repeaters range in price from some models that are relatively inexpensive at less than $50 to some that are well over $150.  The more expensive models generally have a larger range and retransmit the radio waves stronger than cheaper products.  In spite of that, you need to consider your own needs when purchasing a wireless repeater.
